Thousands have lost everything and are displaced or unable to leave their homes. Over 200 bridges have been destroyed and 5 historic covered bridges in Vermont are gone. Whole towns are stranded and others are unreachable by main roads. Electricity is said to be out for weeks in some parts of the state of Vermont. Railroad beds are destroyed and in places the tracks are hovering over thin air where there once was land. The cost of the damage to the infrastructure of Vermont is astronomical, and most of the folks who lost their homes did not have flood insurance.
